Harbour House 2024

Overlooking Sydney Harbour, the brief was to renovate this early 1900s home, maintaining its original charm but allowing for modern living and maximising outlook and sunlight. While creation of an open plan kitchen / sitting / dining area spilling onto a balcony overlooking the harbour and the addition of an attic bedroom were motivation for the works, the result optimised overall liveability and functionality for a young family. Walls were removed to connect the kitchen to the living areas and view, pared back detailing for the new works was implemented to respect the federation details of the house, enhancing the original features while introducing modern inclusions.

The renovation extended to each level of the house – the ground floor was opened up to create a spacious, light-filled living area. Original fireplaces were restored, and the timber flooring was updated with French oak to maintain the historical feel. Modern conveniences, including a state-of-the-art kitchen and smart home technology, were seamlessly integrated. The second floor, housing the bedrooms, was renovated to enhance comfort and privacy. Each room features restored period details, complemented by contemporary fixtures and finishes. The master suite boasts an en-suite bathroom with harbour views, creating a serene retreat.

The attic floor was created as a versatile space, perfect for a home office, studio, or guest suite. Large windows maximize the panoramic harbour views, flooding the space with natural light.

The renovation of this Federation house stands as a harmonious and respectful blend of historical preservation and modern innovation. The owners are delighted with the transformation of their much-loved family home.
